Description

There are Low Miles No Miles cars...and then there are dealer specials that even seasoned enthusiasts have never heard of. This 1988 Ford Thunderbird Sport Bill Elliott Signature Edition falls squarely into that category, showing 67,050 miles and representing one of just 50 examples built to celebrate Bill Elliott's 1987 NASCAR Winston Cup Championship.

Vehicle Overview

Finished in red over a matching red interior, this 1988 Ford Thunderbird Sport is powered by its original 5.0L V8 paired with an automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. The odometer currently shows 67,050 miles, and the car remains remarkably original throughout.

What makes this Thunderbird so special isn't just the Fox-platform underpinnings or the V8 under the hood, it's the story behind it.

This is one of only 50 Bill Elliott Signature Edition Thunderbirds sold exclusively through Bill Elliott's dealership in Georgia. Each received unique dealership-installed equipment including custom American Racing wheels, special ground effects, gold striping and lettering, and Bill Elliott badging commemorating his 1987 Winston Cup Championship season.

For NASCAR fans and Fox-body enthusiasts alike, this represents an incredibly unusual intersection of motorsports history and Ford performance heritage.

Story

According to the seller, the original owner was such a devoted Bill Elliott fan that he flew from Louisville, Kentucky to Georgia specifically to purchase this car new from Bill Elliott's dealership.

He would go on to own the car for the next 36 years until his passing, at which point ownership transferred to his niece in 2024. After a brief period in her care, the car was purchased by the current owner, making him just the third owner from new.

Interestingly, the current owner originally purchased the car with plans of building and modifying it into a custom Fox Thunderbird project. It wasn't until after the purchase that he learned exactly what he had found.

Once the history and rarity became clear, the plans changed.

Recognizing that a one-of-fifty Bill Elliott Signature Edition deserved preservation rather than modification, he made the decision to pass it on to the next caretaker who would appreciate it for what it is.

Honestly, we respect that.

Condition

This Thunderbird presents as a highly original survivor that has clearly benefited from long-term ownership and care.

The seller reports no mechanical issues and notes that significant recent maintenance has been completed including new tires, a new battery, front brakes, wheel bearings, rotors, a full tune-up including plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter replacement, and timing verification. Additional recent service includes replacement power window motors and air conditioning service.

The original paint remains in place and shows typical signs of careful use including a handful of minor rock chips and age-related imperfections consistent with the mileage shown.

The interior is reported to be exceptionally well preserved and reflective of the care the car received throughout its life.

Overall, this is a highly original and well-maintained example of one of the rarest Fox-platform Thunderbirds ever produced.

Letter From The LMNM Team

This is exactly the kind of car we love.

Not because it's the fastest car we've ever listed.

Not because it's the lowest mileage.

But because it's the kind of automotive oddball that most people have absolutely no idea exists.

A Bill Elliott dealership special Thunderbird?

One of fifty built?

Celebrating Awesome Bill's 1987 championship season?

That's the kind of stuff that makes this hobby fun.

The story only gets better from there. The original owner loved Bill Elliott enough to fly to Georgia just to buy this exact car and then kept it for more than three decades.

And honestly, that's exactly how cars like this survive.

The seller deserves credit too. He bought the car planning to turn it into a custom Fox-body project before realizing what he actually had sitting in his garage. Instead of modifying it, he chose to preserve it and pass it along.

That says a lot.

Cars like this fall through the cracks of automotive history all the time. Thankfully, this one didn't.
